AVID

As part of the AVID program, students will take their grade-level AVID elective class each year.

• Two class hours per week are spent sharpening academic and life skills necessary for success in college, like writing, note taking, research and study skills.
• Two class hours per week consist of tutor-led study groups designed to mentor AVID students in college prep coursework including Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) classes.
• One class hour per week is focused on team building, motivational activities, ogranizational sklills,  and career and college exploration.

• Participate positively and fully in the AVID course and requirements.
• Successfully complete a rigorous college preparatory path including AP and IB coursework.
• Participate in school activities and step up as student leaders.
• Apply to and attend a two or four-year college or univeristy after graduating high school.
• Demonstrate individual determination and commitment to success.

• The oppurtunity to work with peers and tutors to demonstrate command of academic language and concepts in core classes

• A supportive environment to practice critical thinking, inquiry, and self-advocacy skills

• Dedicated class time to explore post-secondary options, financial assistance programs and potential career pathways.

• Field trips to local two and four-year insitutions.

• Guest speakers with life experience as admissions counselors, university students, research professors and professionals in a variety of fields

• A sense of personal pride and achievement gained through hard work and determination

AVID student profile

• Have at least a 2.0 GPA or showing academic growth
• Are currently or will soon be enrolled in honors, IB or AP courses
• Take initiative to enroll in credit recovery courses to ensure on-time graduation.
• Participate in extracurricular activites and community service
• Good attendance
• Demonstrated college potential
• Capability to complete a rigorous academic curriculum
• Demonstrated motivation and determination to succeed

AVID students must meet one or more of the following criteria

• Will be the first in their family to attend college
• Identify as a member of a racial/ethnic group that is under-represented on college campuses
• Qualify for free/reduced-price lunch
• Special circumstances unique to the student

AVID prerequisites include the following:

• Middle school AVID and/or
• AVID application, interview and selection process

Application process is open to students in grades 9-11.
