Licensed school counselors work with all stakeholders, including students, parents, teachers, administration and the community, to meet the diverse needs of our population.

If you reside in South Minneapolis, and/or you are a non-English speaker, begin by going to the New Families Center at 3345 Chicago Ave South. Their phone number is 612-668-3700.

If you are an English speaker and you reside on the North side you will go the Student Placement Center at 1250 West Broadway. Their phone number is 612-668-1840.

Students are placed at a school through these offices. After placement, students can call the school they’ll be attending for an appointment to register with the school.

Ideally, the student would have told their current school that they are leaving and have formally withdrawn.

A parent or guardian should be with the student if they are under 18. We will need:

Birth certificate, passport, or I-94 card.
Transcript
Testing scores
Health & immunization records
Attendance
Special Ed records if applicable
Discipline records if applicable
Withdrawal grades if it was close to the end of the grading period.

Once they come to the school the registration process can take from 1 to 2 hours. They will fill out many papers, talk to a counselor and build a schedule. It is important that the counselor knows what classes they successfully completed when making their schedule. They will meet with the nurse, social worker, attendance, etc., They will get a student ID card and a bus card if they are eligible. We do not have school buses as all high schools currently use the public transportation system. Roosevelt is served by bus and light rail train. We hope these details will help your student make a smooth transfer in a new place.

Financial Aid

Paying for college can be difficult for many students and families. Luckily, there are many resources that can help.

FAFSA: FAFSA on the web is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. All eligible students who are planning on attending college must fill out their FAFSA to receive federal aid through grants and loans. Click the link on the right to see their website and online application. Please call, email or come to a workshop for assistance in filling out the FAFSA.

MN Dream Act: Undocumented students can apply for financial assistance for college through the MN Dream Act. Students who meet the criteria in the MN Dream Act will be eligible for in-state resident tuition rates at public colleges and universities and state financial aid available to students who meet state residency requirements. Students will also be eligible for privately funded financial aid through public colleges and universities. Click the link on the right for more details regarding how to apply and other educational financial supports for undocumented families.

IB Classes for College Credit

International Baccalaureate (IB)
An internationally recognized rigorous course of study across all academic areas. Roosevelt High School is an authorized IB world school and Middle Years Programme (MYP). Students take exams in May according to the IB exam schedule. The IB Diploma Programme affords students numerous benefits including the development of critical thinking skills, connections between the classroom and the community, and college credit for their course work recognized by post-secondary institutions worldwide. http://www.ibmn.org/

MN Dept of Ed PSEO Enrollment Options

Postsecondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) is a program that allows 10th-, 11th- and 12th-grade students to earn both high school and college credit while still in high school, through enrollment in and successful completion of college-level, nonsectarian courses at eligible participating postsecondary institutions. Most PSEO courses are offered on the campus of the postsecondary institution; some courses are offered online. Each participating college or university sets its own requirements for enrollment into the PSEO courses. Eleventh and 12th-grade students may take PSEO courses on a full- or part-time basis; 10th graders may take one career/technical PSEO course. If they earn at least a grade C in that class, they may take additional PSEO courses.

There is no charge to PSEO students for tuition, books or fees for items that are required to participate in a course. Students must meet the PSEO residency and eligibility requirements and abide by participation limits specified in Minnesota Statutes, section 124D.09. Funds are available to help pay transportation expenses for qualifying students to participate in PSEO courses on college campuses. Schools must provide information to all students in grades 8-11 and their families by March 1, every year. Students must notify their school by May 30 if they want to participate in PSEO for the following school year.

Simiar to PSEO, these college-level courses are taught by high school teachers in the high schools. Roosevelt offers several of these courses through our Health Careers Program. Students who successfully complete the course work earn credits at MCTC or Hennepin Technical College.

Schedule Change Policy

RHS Schedule Change Policy - 2023-2024

Student schedule change requests for Semester 1 will be considered on an individual basis.

The last day to request a schedule change is the 5th day after the start of the semester.
The last day to drop an IB class is the 10th day after the start of the semester.

Acceptable schedule change requests:

I am placed in wrong class (already took it, wrong level)
I am missing a core class (English, Social Studies, Math, Science)
I need a required class for my program/graduation
There is an error on my schedule

Unacceptable schedule change request:

I want a different hour/teacher
I want to be with a friend
I selected it on my course selection sheet in the spring, but I’ve changed my mind

How to request a schedule change: To make a schedule change, you must email your school counselor. Schedule changes are not always possible.

Testing information

Four-year Colleges and Universities - Almost all of these schools require students to take and submit scores for one of the standardized tests (ACT, SAT, and/or SAT II). There are a few exceptions to this, however, so we encourage you to investigate the admission requirements for those schools that you are interested in. Fairtest.org provides you with a list of schools that do not require standardized test scores for admission.

The purpose of these tests is to assess students general educational development and their preparedness for college-level work. Because these are national tests, colleges are able to compare your score with scores from students around the country. These comparisons give colleges a better idea of what your grade point average and class rank mean in comparison to what your peers are doing nationally.

Community and Technical Colleges - These schools require students to take the Accuplacer placement exam. However, a students' ACT or PLAN test scores may exempt them from this testing requirement.

ACT

PSAT

The PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) is a test that allows students to practice for the SAT I. This test measures skills in the following areas: verbal reasoning, critical reading, math problem solving, and writing. It also gives students the opportunity to enter the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) scholarship programs.

Reasons to take the PSAT/NMSQT:

Learn what your strengths and weaknesses are for skills necessary for college study—you can then focus your preparation
Compare your score with those of others applying to college
Enter the National Merit Scholarship Corporation scholarship competition
Practice for the SAT tests--familiarize yourself with the kinds of questions you'll see
Receive information from colleges when you take advantage of the Student Search Service

We recommend that you take the PSAT/NMSQT as a sophomore (at the earliest) or as a junior. If you take it as a sophomore, don't be discouraged if your scores are lower than you had expected. Remember--this is a junior level test.

Students will need to register to take the PSAT at Roosevelt. Registration typically happens at Roosevelt during the school day in late September. The PSAT test date is typically in October.

PSAT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Qualifying Test)

What is this test? The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is a standardized test that provides first-hand practice for the SAT. It also gives Grade 11 students a chance to enter National Merit scholarship programs and gain access to college and career planning tools. Students will also receive feedback on their strengths/weaknesses for college studies.

When is the test? Typically the 2nd week of October

Who takes this test? This optional test is a rigorous national assessment for Grade 11 students and is used to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Program. 10^th graders may take it as a practice SAT test; they may not enter the National Merit scholarship competition until their junior year.

SAT 1 Reasoning Test

The SAT Reasoning Test or SAT I is a 4 hour test measuring critical reading, mathematical, and writing skills. Including instruction and break time, this test will last approximately 4 and a half hours. The sections of the test may appear in any order, thus your neighbors test order will be completely different from your own. The test consists of the following:

A transcript may be obtained FOR CURRENT STUDENTS by filling out a transcript request form and sending request to Heather.Hodgkins@mpls.k12.mn.us .
The first 5 transcripts are free for current students. Beyond the fifth transcript, the cost per transcript is $2.00 and may be made by check or cash.
There is a $2.00 fee per transcript for former students.
All transcripts for scholarship applications are free for current students.

Please be aware that an Official transcript will be stamped with the high school seal and must be kept in the sealed envelope for the transcript to remain official.
